5 Steps To A High Performing Team

Mar 17, 2022

There’s no beating around the bush, we have a great pedigree in delivering engaging team building events.

One thing that we set our sights on many moons ago was striving to ensure that our workshops and events left teams measurably more engaged and high performing.

We were already delivering MBTI, Everything DiSC and Belbin Team Roles to underpin our team sessions with more theory to build trust and group awareness.

The problem was that we were missing a tried and tested pathway to building on that initial success and moving teams towards high performance more effectively.

Then we found Patrick Lencioni’s 5 Dysfunctions Of A Team framework which offered us 5 steps to a high performing team.

Lencioni’s 2002 book 5 Dysfunctions Of A Team (link) outlines a powerful model and practical actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build cohesive, effective teams.

The 5 dysfunctions are:

  • (1) absence of trust
  • (2) fear of conflict
  • (3) lack of commitment
  • (4) avoidance of accountability
  • (5) inattention to results

Before I go on I’ll let the man himself tell you all about his 5 steps to a high performing team

A lot of team building activities and workshops consciously (or unconsciously) address dysfunction 1 by building trust.

The problem is that time and again teams walk out of those one-off team sessions feeling energised and more cohesive yet without the faintest idea how to take that back into the workplace in a way that sustainably improves their performance.

Within a week it’s back to how it was before.

This lack of structure feeds into team building getting a reputation for being ‘soft’ or a being a throwaway when in reality if a team is dysfunctional it can cost the business serious money and time,.

Lencioni’s model offers an answer with a series of focussed workshops that give your teams a clear 5 steps to a high performing team with the tools and actionable steps needed to make the changes last.

We’ve been using the 5 steps for sometime with great success.
