The Human Advantage: Why In-Person Team Building Will Matter More Than Ever in the Age of AI

AI

From Neil Cleaver, Our Co-Founder and Facilitator

In my two decades of running EML Team Building, I’ve seen plenty of change: shifts in workplace culture, new generations entering the workforce, and the rise of hybrid and remote teams. But nothing comes close to the scale and speed of what’s coming next with AI.

How is AI changing the workplace?

AI is not just the next big thing. It is the thing.

Anyone whose job involves inputting, analysing, managing or creating digital content, from a desk, remotely or in an office, is going to see their world completely transformed within the next 36 months. Tasks that once required human hands and minds will soon be done faster, more accurately, and more cost-effectively by AI.

This isn’t a doomsday prediction, it’s reality. And it’s happening fast.

But here’s the opportunity I see- both for us at EML Team Building, and for businesses everywhere:

AI may dominate the digital world, but the real human advantage lies in the real world.

Why in-person meetings are more important than ever:

We will always need people to connect, to inspire, to lead, to serve, to collaborate, to create things that exist beyond screens. That’s where team building (real, physical, face-to-face team building) becomes not just valuable, but vital.

At EML, we’ve always believed that people learn best when they do something together- when they’re outside the office, working toward a common goal, laughing, problem-solving, maybe even failing and trying again. These shared experiences build relationships, trust, and resilience in a way no video call or productivity tool ever can.

Does the rise in automation and AI impact teamwork?

As AI automates more of what happens on screens, businesses will need to invest more intentionally in what happens between people. Not only to maintain a healthy culture, but to unlock the kind of human qualities AI can never replicate: empathy, intuition, humour, creativity, leadership, and teamwork.

And let’s not forget, there’s going to be a lot of disruption. Entire roles and departments may disappear or evolve drastically. Change on this scale is unsettling. Teams will need spaces to reconnect, rebuild trust, and rediscover their shared purpose.

Where does EML come in?

Whether it’s a strategic off-site, a high-energy away day, or an experiential learning session focused on leadership or communication, EML is ready to meet this moment. We’ve seen the shift coming, and we’re evolving with it- leaning into formats that prioritise real human connection, not screen time.

The businesses that thrive in the AI age won’t be the ones with the most software. They’ll be the ones with the strongest people, bonded by trust, clarity, and shared experience.

So if you’re thinking about how to future-proof your teams, not just for productivity, but for cohesion and creativity, don’t look to the next app or platform.

Look to your people. Bring them together. Let them build something real.

Let’s talk.
